…Thankfully, there seems to be some help on the way. Back in February, President Obama unveiled a plan to raise all minimum wages, both tipped and non-tipped, to $9 an hour. A bit more drastic, and therefore a bit more of a Hail Mary pass in the Republican-controlled House, is a bill put forth by Rep. George Miller from California and Sen. Tom Harkin from Iowa that attempts to raise the minimum wage for tipped workers to the actual minimum wage, “first moving it to $3 and then to 70 percent of the full wage through annual 95-cent increases.” Ultimately, the federal minimum wage would be raised to $10.10 by 2015.

A group of high school seniors at Wilcox County High School in rural south Georgia made history this past weekend by bucking their community’s longstanding tradition of racially segregated proms—yes, one prom for white teens and one for black teens. Indeed, thanks to the inspiring students behind the Integrated Prom movement, for the first time ever, black and white students in the community dressed up and danced the night away together.

How does a community get around having a prom that’s open to everyone without violating any civil rights laws? Easy. You just don’t let the school sponsor it. After the courts integrated the schools in the area, proms became private, invite-only events. White parents began raising funds for an all-white senior prom, leaving black families with no choice but to follow suit and host proms for their children.

Yes, this still goes on on 2013, and not just in this town, either. And yes, some white Wilcox students still attended the all-white only prom. But as you can see from the video above, what happens when students say they’ve had enough and take action is truly inspiring.

The DREAM Act is an act that gives aspiring immigrant children brought to the United States through no fault of their own a chance to become citizens by either serving two years in the military or by completing four years of higher education.

Given the opportunity for educational equality, over 3 million young immigrants can meet their dreams and better contribute to their local and national community. Everyone dreams, and that’s why we must pass the DREAM Act!

My students have been working hard putting together a petition to have Congress include the DREAM Act in their immigration reform. Signing this petition would mean a lot to them, and to the 3 million children of immigrants and undocumented workers whose lives would change for the better were they given the opportunity for affordable higher education and a path to citizenship.
