Go read the whole article

It’s not just focusing on gay and lesbian partnership rights anymore

I mean look at this

“It will make city forms gender neutral, and makes it easier for transgender residents to request gender markers on some records, and name changes. Gender-neutral bathrooms are also required in city-controlled buildings, as well as access to buildings based on gender identity.

“Healthcare discrimination against non-union transgender city employees will also be banned, and the legislation ensures that employees in Philadelphia will be able to dress in accordance with their gender identity.”

No one’s ever cared before and now it is just like “here is a windfall of unexpectedly amazing things now go live your life in happiness”

Way to go Philly!

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS.

…Thankfully, there seems to be some help on the way. Back in February, President Obama unveiled a plan to raise all minimum wages, both tipped and non-tipped, to $9 an hour. A bit more drastic, and therefore a bit more of a Hail Mary pass in the Republican-controlled House, is a bill put forth by Rep. George Miller from California and Sen. Tom Harkin from Iowa that attempts to raise the minimum wage for tipped workers to the actual minimum wage, “first moving it to $3 and then to 70 percent of the full wage through annual 95-cent increases.” Ultimately, the federal minimum wage would be raised to $10.10 by 2015.

Read more here.

A group of high school seniors at Wilcox County High School in rural south Georgia made history this past weekend by bucking their community’s longstanding tradition of racially segregated proms—yes, one prom for white teens and one for black teens. Indeed, thanks to the inspiring students behind the Integrated Prom movement, for the first time ever, black and white students in the community dressed up and danced the night away together.

How does a community get around having a prom that’s open to everyone without violating any civil rights laws? Easy. You just don’t let the school sponsor it. After the courts integrated the schools in the area, proms became private, invite-only events. White parents began raising funds for an all-white senior prom, leaving black families with no choice but to follow suit and host proms for their children.

Yes, this still goes on on 2013, and not just in this town, either. And yes, some white Wilcox students still attended the all-white only prom. But as you can see from the video above, what happens when students say they’ve had enough and take action is truly inspiring.

My name is Brandon Stanton and I’m a photographer in New York City. As many of you already know, several months ago I was approached by the fashion label DKNY, who offered me $15,000 to purchase 300 of my photographs. I politely refused the offer. But earlier this week, one of my fans discovered that DKNY was using my photographs anyway— in Asia. (Full Story:http://thebea.st/13ijYt6)

As atonement for this infringement, I publicly requested that DKNY donate $100,000 in my name to the YMCA in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, so that underprivileged children could attend summer camp. DKNY responded on Monday with a $25,000 donation.

Over the next three days, my audience stepped in and raised the full $100,000 themselves. Over 3,000 people chipped in, and raised an astonishing $103,710 in 72 hours. (http://bit.ly/YTy4h3)

I have no interest in vilifying DKNY. It is a company composed of thousands of good people. The founder, Donna Karan, is highly respected around the world for both her creativity and philanthropy.

But I would appreciate if you would REBLOG this post, and lend your voice to my request that DKNY raise their donation to match the $103,710 that we raised.

Together, we could create a $208,000 investment in the lives of children in one of New York’s most vital and diverse neighborhoods. Thank you so much.

With a few seconds you could help 3 million children

The DREAM Act is an act that gives aspiring immigrant children brought to the United States through no fault of their own a chance to become citizens by either serving two years in the military or by completing four years of higher education.

Given the opportunity for educational equality, over 3 million young immigrants can meet their dreams and better contribute to their local and national community. Everyone dreams, and that’s why we must pass the DREAM Act!

My students have been working hard putting together a petition to have Congress include the DREAM Act in their immigration reform. Signing this petition would mean a lot to them, and to the 3 million children of immigrants and undocumented workers whose lives would change for the better were they given the opportunity for affordable higher education and a path to citizenship.

Please reblog and signal boost and, most importantly, sign the petition!

This is horrifying.

What?! Is this accurate?!
I’ve found a Jezebel post about it, and this about it.
It would seem to be accurate. I am beyond words.

TIME Magazine is asking who should be the Person of the Year, and among its forty options is: Undocumented Immigrants.

That’s right, we (the undocumented population) have the chance to be named “Person of the Year” as a collective! What does it mean? It means that Once again, the struggles of undocumented immigrants will be highlighted on a reputable publication - except that this time, it won’t be just the cover but a prestigious mention that has been awarded to John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and other notable historical figures.

What better way to be “noticed”, right?

So what are you waiting for? CLICK HERE and vote!

SIGNAL BOOST!

Right now it’s 40% “definitely” and 60% “no way” so let’s tumblr-bomb this and make Undocumented Immigrants TIME’s Person of the Year 2012!

Currently at 45% definitely, 55% no way. GO TUMBLR GO.

I saw this earlier today! There are some big names in there, from Malala Yousafzai to PSY. We may think we may hear about undocumented immigrants in the United States frequently in the news, but their own stories and voices are often left out of the controversy. Better coverage is needed. I hope TIME is able to step up to the plate.

And Costco’s health plan makes those at many other retailers look Scroogish. One analyst, Bill Dreher of Deutsche Bank, complained last year that at Costco “it’s better to be an employee or a customer than a shareholder.” Mr. Sinegal begs to differ. He rejects Wall Street’s assumption that to succeed in discount retailing, companies must pay poorly and skimp on benefits, or must ratchet up prices to meet Wall Street’s profit demands. Good wages and benefits are why Costco has extremely low rates of turnover and theft by employees, he said. And Costco’s customers, who are more affluent than other warehouse store shoppers, stay loyal because they like that low prices do not come at the workers’ expense. “This is not altruistic,” he said. “This is good business.””

-
How Costco Became the Anti-Wal-Mart - New York Times (via alexdarke)

THIS IS NOT ALTRUISTIC. THIS IS GOOD BUSINESS. Holy shit, when the fuck will that sink through every fucking person’s head. You pay a worker a living wage, HOLY SHIT THEY WILL SPEND MONEY ON THINGS AND KEEP THE ECONOMIC WHEEL TURNING. You keep a worker healthy, HOLY SHIT THEY WON’T LOSE PRODUCTIVITY. You treat a worker well, HOLY SHIT THEY FUNCTION BETTER AT THEIR JOB.

(via feignedwisdom)

It’s true. There’s a whole book called “Sabotage” about the things employees do when they’re angry with their employer. I’ve committed acts of sabotage on the job myself.

Also, a good reminder that Costco is a fantastic company and a business worth supporting. They’re one of like five huge US brands that doesn’t donate to Republicans.

But yeah — the problem is that the prevailing school of economic thought in the United States doesn’t believe in any of those things you mentioned, Twig. Our economic system is totally Ferengi in nature.

An estimated 10,000 activists flooded the streets of Dublin on Saturday to protest Ireland’s stringent abortion policies. The predominantly Catholic country has a total ban on all abortion services, with a narrow exception in cases where a pregnancy may threaten a woman’s life. But the recent death of Savita Halappanavar — the 31-year-old Indian woman who died of blood poisoning after an Irish hospital refused to terminate her pregnancy — highlights the fact that women in Ireland struggle to access reproductive health services even when their lives may be at stake. Halappanavar’s tragic story is quickly becoming an international controversy, prompting the Irish government to promise to reexamine its abortion policy.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets today with signs and banners bearing Halappanavar’s image, vowing that the tragic events of her death will “never again” happen in their country (all images via Broadsheet)

What Americans Keep Ignoring About Finland’s School Success

Seriously, I know I’ve said this before, but I do not understand why none of our legislators stand up and say, “hey! another country had this problem, and here was there solution, and it worked really well! let’s try it!” American exceptionalism. Sigh.

The 2 Love My Lips Drink Spike Detector identifies the presence GHB (gamma-hydroxyl-butyrate), and ketamine (powerful sedative). Each testing strip contains two square testing pads which change colour when they come into contact with these drugs. The pads only change colour when there is enough drug to have an effect on your health and welfare.

Sad that this has to exist but I might as well buy some since this has become a thing I need to constantly and actively watch out for.

I didn’t know these existed until now. It’s really important to protect yourselves. One can never be too careful when it comes to this stuff and unfortunately, the use of date rape drugs is extremely common. Any precautionary measure you can take to protect yourself is worth it.

“Illegal” as a word to describe undocumented people is a term for the sole purpose of demonizing and Otherizing folks. A term to strip them of their narrative. A construction to devoid them of all the other identities they posses: mother, father, student, friend, etc.

Movies you should watch: Arranged (2009). Find it on Hulu!

Synopsis: Rochel is an Orthodox Jew, and Nasira a Muslim of Syrian origin. They are both young teachers at a public school in Brooklyn. They also have something else in common—they are going though the process of arranged marriages through their respective religions and traditional customs. With both family pressure on the one hand, and the rejection of traditional values by the outside world on the other, Rochel and Nasira will have to rely on each other and their friendship to pull through this difficult time of their lives, striving to be strong women in charge of their own happiness, while keeping their deep religious and cultural convictions.

This movie is soo good! You should definitely watch it if you haven’t already, it’s lovely.
